Most of New England celebrates the following national, state and local holidays. Banks and municipal buildings will be closed on many of the following dates:

  • New Year's Day - January 1

  • Evacuation Day - March 17 (Boston holiday)

  • Patriot's Day - 3rd Monday in April (Massachusetts only)

  • Columbus Day - 2nd Monday in October

    Logan International Airport serves almost 50 domestic and international airlines, including (depending on country, talk about air service from that country.

    If you are connecting to another airline, intra-terminal shuttle busses will get you there quickly. Airport Shuttle Buses provide free service between terminals, the Airport MBTA station, and the Water Shuttle Dock. Airport Handicap Van is available on request to provide free service between terminals. You can access this service via the "Van Phone" in the baggage claim areas.

    Public Transportation is provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) including: Subway: Known as the T, the Blue Line can take you into Boston and connect you to the other three lines, which can take you through Boston and the surrounding area towns. Look for a black T on a white circular sign to find a station. The fare: $1.00 Local Bus Service also runs daily at a cost of $1.00 which connects to many subway lines and covers routes the subway does not.Commuter Rail Service serves the Greater Boston area at a cost of up to $7.00.

    Interstate Service is available by bus and rail:
    Interstate Bus Service is available throughout New England. The major bus terminal in Boston is Trailways, across from South Station Train Station. From South Station, Greyhound buses depart to destinations across the United States. Regional Bus Service: A variety of bus lines offer service in each New England State. Amtrak Rail Service departs from South Station with service to New Have, New York, Philadelphia, Providence, Springfield, Washington, D.C. and Worcester, as well as frequent service to other destinations in the US. Amtrak Rail Service departs from North Station with service to New Hampshire and Maine.

    Taxis:
    Taxicab service to and from the airport, and within the city, is easy to obtain and is available 24 hours a day.

    Rental Cars:
    All major companies have locations at Logan Airport and most have downtown Boston and Cambridge locations as well.

    Limousine/Car Service:
    You can call a limousine from the airport. Numbers are posted in Terminal C.

    Water Shuttle offers frequent daily service between Logan and Rowes Wharf which is located in Boston's Financial District.

    City Water Taxi is Boston's only on-call water transportation between the Logan Dock and more than 10 landings throughout downtown Boston Harbor.

    New England is also easily accessible by international airports in New York and Montreal.

    You can exchange currency easily in Boston; services are more limited outside of the city. Most banks exchange currency, as do a number of travel centers. It's best to carry US currency traveler's checks or small amounts of US cash. Automated Teller Machines are quite popular and accept credit and debit Cards.

    Credit Cards/Traveler's Checks
    New England businesses accept most credit cards and US dollar traveler's checks. Some restaurants accept cash only. It's good to have a photo I.D, as many businesses will require it before they can cash your traveler's checks.

    Time Zonesto top ^

    New England is in the Eastern Time Zone (1 hour ahead of Central, 2 hours ahead of Mountain and 3 hours ahead of Pacific Time). The Eastern Time Zone is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time. From the first Saturday in April until the last Saturday in October, New England observes Daylight Savings Time and turns all it's clocks ahead one hour.

    The United States operates on 110 volts. Electrical outlets accept two-pin plugs.

    Summer temperatures vary from 20° C to 30° C. Temperatures are higher in the city and cooler on the coast. Winters are cold and brisk with temperatures hovering around freezing. The annual rainfall in New England is between 102 - 122 cm.

    Medium weight clothing works for most of the year, although lightweight garments are recommended for the summer months with a sweater or shawl for air conditioning. Warm clothing is necessary during the winter months and in the mountains. New England is fairly casual. Formal dress (tie and jacket for men) for dinner is required at some restaurants in Boston and at some resorts throughout New England.

    Most restaurants begin the evening meal at 6 p.m. and stop serving as early as 10 p.m., later on weekends.

    Tipping for Services

    Most restaurants will ad a 15% gratuity for large groups. If it isn't included, 15 - 20% of your meal or bar bill is recommended. Other tips: 15% for a taxi; $1.00 - $1.50 per bag for airport porters and hotel bellmen.

    The legal drinking age is 21. Proper photo I.D. is your passport, a state driver's license, or a valid motor vehicle license issued by another state or jurisdiction.

    Speed Limit: The speed limit on most major highways in New England is 65 miles per hour and is strictly enforced. Elsewhere, limits range from 30 - 45 miles/hr (32-80km/hr). Drivers License: While most non-U.S. driver's licenses are acceptable, it is best to bring an international driver's license. Safety Belts: All vehicle occupants must wear safety belts. Children must be properly secured in child safety seats until they are age five, unless they weigh over 40 pounds. Children under age five and over 40 pounds must be in a booster seat. Rotaries: When entering a rotary intersection, yield to any vehicle already in the rotary. Right Turn on Red: A right turn on red at a traffic signal is permitted after coming to a full stop and yielding to pedestrians and other traffic, unless a "No Turn on Red" sign is posted. School Buses: Vehicles from either direction must stop and remain stopped while the front and rear lights of school buses are flashing, except when approaching from the opposite direction on a divided highway. To ensure your safety and that of others on the road, New England strictly enforces the drunk driving law.

    Connecticut: Six percent sales tax is added to all items. 12% tax is added to lodging and meals. Maine: Five percent sales tax is added to all items. 7% tax is added to lodging and meals. Massachusetts: Five percent sales tax is added to all items except non-restaurant food and clothing valued under $175. Five percent tax is added to restaurant and take-out meals. 9.7% is the average lodging tax plus an addition 2.5% in Boston and Cambridge for the convention center tax. New Hampshire: There is no sales tax. 8% tax is added to lodging and meals. Rhode Island: Seven percent sales tax is added to all items except clothing. 5% tax is added to lodging only. Vermont: Five percent sales tax is added to all items except clothing valued at under $110. 9% tax is added to lodging and meals.
